The Starfish Heart Positioner is part of the Octopus Tissue Stabilization System which is used during Beating Heart bypass surgery. The Octopus System gets rid of the need for a heart-lung machine because the heart continues to beat during the procedure. The Starfish helps surgeons position the heart with a suction grip. The jointed arm provides flexibility, and enables access to coronary arteries, even those on the back of the heart.

Medtronic collaborated with WhiteBoard to make modifications to the initial Starfish design. The design enhancements included the addition of wire to the Starfish arm that enables it to articulate more easily. WhiteBoard also created prototypes of the Starfish before final production. The result is an enhanced Starfish design that enables the surgeon to navigate the myriad of challenges that arise in this extremely difficult surgery.
